This may well be the last time I'll update my profile, so I'll try to summarize the whole story.
My career: When I was growing up in Waverly, I found out that I was good at going to school. I didn't know anything else that I was good at, so I kept going to school. I made it last my whole life. In the end, I taught philosophy for 49 years and enjoyed every one of them. I always found that work challenging, absorbing, rewarding. When all's said and done, I taught at Wellesley College, University of Tennessee, Knoxville (three different times!), Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly-Humboldt), Maryville College, and East Tennessee State University. So, you can see, I bounced around -- was bounced around would be more accurate -- quite a bit. I retired in 2010.
My family: My first marriage was to Marilyn Ross in 1965. We had two sons, Bill (b. 1969) and Jay (b. 1971). Bill now teaches English, as his mother did, at University of Tennessee. Jay teaches visually-impaired kids for Buncombe (NC) County schools and runs outdoor adventure camps for visually impaired kids during the summers. Both of my sons are married to public school teachers. As you can see, who durn family is teachers!
My second marriage is to Mary Read English. I met her in a commune in Knoxville in 1978. We've been together now for over forty years! Wonderful marriage to a wonderful woman! Mary has dementia now and so I'm spending my final years caring for her. We plan to move to Arbor Terrace, an assisted living and memory care facility here in Knoxville as soon as they have a vacancy. And that'll probably be the end of my story.
It pains me, but because if Mary's condition, I don't think I'll ever make it back to Waverly. I think of Waverly and my classmates there so often. I still miss you! You were so good to and for me. Waverly will never by far from my heart.
