I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of my friend, Tom Hicks. Tom was a retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel and was my Go-To Guy for all things pertaining to the town of Waverly. Tom was an active member of the Bremer County Historical Society and I never found a question he couldn't answer about the history of the city or the county.
Tom was a boyhood friend in the late 1950s and then we went our separate ways and never saw each other for forty years. We rekindled the friendship when my wife and I visited Waverly in the year 2000--a former science teacher, Frank Flikinger, gave me Tom's address and suggested that I might like to get in touch with him. That was probably the best free advice anyone ever gave me!
We struck up a friendship instantly, and contiued it for the next twenty years--mostly by email but by telephone also We talked about everything, and compared ideas on aircraft design, black holes and dark matter, number theory, technology, science, military campaigns, World War II history, the Civil War, politics, and whatever else came up. There wasn't any subject that Tom didn't have an informed opinion about. He was an amazing resource and a dear personal friend. We both learned a great deal from each other.
I miss him and I miss his wide experience and his clear, insightful thinking.
